Erectile DysfunctionWhat exactly is erectile dysfunction? The term erectile dysfunction (ED) can be used to describe a varying range of situations, but it generally denotes when a man is not able to achieve an erection. Occasional erectile dysfunction is normal and happens to most men from time to time. As men age they may also notice changes in erectile function and that is normal too. It may take longer to reach an erection, the erection may not be as rigid, or it may take more direct stimulation to get an erection. When a man experiences the persistent inability to reach and maintain an erection, this is complete erectile dysfunction (also called impotence). Erectile dysfunction not only interfere's with a man's sex life, but it can also be very shattering to his self-image. Impotence can occur at any age, but it is most common in men older than 65. Fortunately, the subject of erectile dysfunction is not as taboo as it once was, and men are able to seek treatment for this condition. Doctors are better able to help men than in the past because they are becoming more knowledgeable about the causes of erectile dysfunction and are able to offer new and better treatments. Erectile dysfunction can result from either a physical or emotional problem. With treatment, most patients with ED can overcome this problem. [more] |
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Viagra in 1998, and it became the first oral medication for erectile dysfunction on the market. Since then, doctors have written millions of prescriptions for the blue, diamond-shaped tablets. But Viagra is no longer the only pill that treats this condition. Levitra and Cialis are two other options.
